Greener Hope Agriculture Productivity Programme

Brief introduction to GHAPP

The Greener Hope Agriculture Productivity Programme promotes local technologies and industrialization, transitioning smallholder farming to precision agriculture through mechanization. It aims to establish 1,000 agro-equipment centres nationwide to boost food productivity within the next five years. This initiative supports the Executive Order on Food Security ahead of the next planting season.

THE CHALLENGES

With current high food inflation hovering at 40%, and the inability of food producers to access over 73% of the arable land spread over productivities of existing farm holdings, it is essential to open more farmland rapidly and catalyse an increase in the existing cultivated lands. One veritable strategy to achieving this is to embark on an intensive mechanization program which will rapidly expand cultivable farmland by 100% within a short timeframe. Inaccessibility by most farmers to mechanization services is responsible for 2/3 of food production costs and is at the root of the lack of interest exhibited by the youth towards the sector. The low productivity, high post- harvest losses and subsequent low income for majority of the farmers account for the food insufficiency encountered by Nigerians.

THE SOLUTION

One of Mr. President’s Agenda declared in his State of Emergency Declaration on Food Security was the need to activate 500, 000 hectares of land for farming and river basins for continuous farming. To give impetus to this vision on food security is the utilization of Mechanization as a key to unlocking the potential within the agricultural sector. Challenges inhibiting fast expansion of Agro-mechanization in the country includes but are not limited to: High cost of ownership, scarcity of machinery, lack of maintenance technicians, land tenure system, Poverty and inaccessibility of credit, poor infrastructure, illiteracy of the farmers, and orphaned equipment.
