ORIGIN TECH GROUP REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO NIGERIA, SPONSORS NIGERIA CUP
Origin Tech Group Nigeria recently reinforced its believe in the Nigerian nation by sponsoring the Nigeria Cup of the Ikoyi Golf Club. The frontline indigenous food systems company partnered with the Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association (IGCNA) owners of the Nigeria Cup as a major sponsor of the 2025 edition of the Nigeria Cup tournament during the weeklong annual event which celebrated the 65th Nigerian Independence Anniversary in Lagos recently.
The Nigeria Cup Golf Tournament is a golf sporting tournament which celebrates talent, sportsmanship, inclusiveness amongst diverse nationalities and sub-nationalities that composed the membership of the Golf Section of the Ikoyi Club 1938 and the enduring love for the game of golf.
The tournament which debuted in 1997 to celebrate the nation’s Independence anniversary has continued to not only garner participation from various layers of golf players across seasoned, passionate supporters, new entrants to the sport as well as enthusiasts but to attract discerning corporate stakeholders especially in view of its unique assets of corporate reputation as well as other brand leverages.
One of the highlights of the 2025 edition of the tournament was the introduction of the tournament’s mascot ‘’UGOWA’’, which added zest to the tournament. Ugowa is an indigenous word depicting the iconic and symbolic Nigerian ‘’Eagle’’ in a playful mix of the major Nigerian ethnicities and sub-nationalities. It is a stylized African Fish Eagle, a powerful bird often associated with freedom, confidence and vision incorporating the major Can-Do spirits of energetic, intelligence and gracefulness often exhibited by Nigerians and typical golfers.
In demonstration of its inclusiveness focus to cover diverse layers of the club’s stakeholders, the tournament incorporated qualifying competitions, Children’s, Caddies, Ladies, professionals and sponsors/guests’ tournaments as well as Sponsors-Get-Together, Independence Kitty, all of which were rounded up with the main Nigeria Cup tournament that heralded the Gala night and Awards presenttation, an event that not only ushered in 2025 Independence Day but demonstrated the true spirits of nationalism, friendship and camaraderie amongst various nationalities and sub-nationalities as well as set the tone of the mood for the 65th Independence Day Anniversary.
In the beginning, being a Club for people with diverse background, origin and nationalities, there were tournaments held to commemorate important landmarks of such nationalities at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938.
One of the tournaments played then was the Independence Cup, like American Cup, Japanese Cup, and the Korean Cup among others. These events were organised to celebrate different national days. But in the case of Nigeria, there was a vacuum because the Independent Cup played at the time stopped. Thus, the Nigeria Cup came as a tournament that would celebrate the Independence Anniversary of Nigeria. Over the years, the Nigeria Cup has grown to become one of the most sought-after competitions at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938 and it is still growing.
